Four ways to improve your commercial refrigeration door

The door to the compartment of your commercial refrigeration unit is the gateway to accessing the preserved goods, but it also lets out a lot of cold air. Retrofitting your commercial refrigeration door can save you money on energy and improve the overall quality of your commercial refrigeration unit.

Take a look at these four ways to improve your commercial refrigeration door:

1. Air curtains

Opening a refrigerator door lets out a lot of cold air and lets in warm air from the outside. This forces your commercial refrigeration unit to work extra hard to maintain a cool temperature.

If you operate a business in which refrigerator doors must be opened multiple times a day, you should install air curtains in the doors. Air curtains activate when the doors open, delivering a blast of air to create an invisible barrier between the air inside your refrigeration compartment and the air outside. This reduces the loss of cold temperature and lowers the amount of energy your refrigeration unit consumes.

2. Anti-sweat system

Condensation on a refrigerator door is an issue for a number of reasons: it makes it difficult to see products, it can lead to corrosion and mold in the door frame and gaskets, and it can cause puddles to form on the ground.

An anti-sweat system can adjust the temperature of the refrigerator door to counter the temperature of the external environment, reducing the chances of condensation building on the door.

3. Reactive lights

Besides commercial refrigeration and HVAC, lighting is one of the highest consumers of energy in your facilities. Commercial refrigeration compartments need to be lit for staff and consumers to see the products. However, you can use reactive lighting that only turns on when the door is open to cut back on energy consumption rates.

4. Curtains

Walk-in refrigerators and freezers lose a lot of cold air when the doors open. Installing plastic curtains at the door can help trap the cool air, so the refrigeration unit doesn’t have to work as hard to maintain a cold temperature.
